Best Fake, Non Leather Notebooks
Do you want a leather journal but don’t like the idea of it harming animals? If yes, a faux leather journal may be what you are looking for. Faux leather is synthetic leather made with a fabric base like pu leather. The manufacturers create a leather look, finish, and texture using wax, dye, polyurethane, or polyvinyl chloride.
The result is machine-made leather that looks and feels like real leather and with an even and consistent color. It’s affordable and can also be dyed into any color, usually fade-resistant.
You can buy faux leather journals online or make one using leftover scraps of paper, faux or recycled leather, some cardboard, and waxed thread.
Ten-step DIY Faux Leather Journal
Here are the ten steps for making a DIY faux leather journal using minimal supplies and tools like scissors, an awl, a needle, and a ruler.
-
Start by collecting all the scrap paper you have at home, like unused exercise books, used package paper, broken paper bags, and old envelopes.
-
Decide on the journal size based on the size of most of the scrap paper. Now make a template of this size using a piece of cardboard to make the journal-making process so much easier.
-
It’s because you can use the template to measure, and cut the paper pieces as per the template's size. It’s even better and quicker if you first mark the template size on all the paper pieces. This way you can cut them all at once.
-
Next, fold all the paper pieces into half, and insert a few pages into one another to make a few booklets. The number of booklets you make depends on the number of papers you have and how much faux leather you have.
-
Next, mark where you want the holes for the wax thread in the pages. Make sure you align all the booklets together and draw using a pen.
-
Use the awl, or a large needle, to poke holes in the marked spots.
-
Though folders aren’t necessary, they give support to the journal. So cut a piece of thin cardboard large enough to hold all booklets. Then mark and poke holes into them and fold them like a book cover.
-
Cut the leather into a rectangular long enough to wrap around the booklets and slightly wider. Then place the folder on the leather, and poke holes corresponding to the folder holes in it.
-
Knot the end of the waxed thread and sew it into the leather first, then the cardboard folder, and then the booklet. Going in and out of all the holes binds the paper, cardboard, and faux leather cover together.
- Tie the knot, and your homemade leather journal is ready!
With the minimal amount of supplies, you can make a personalized leather journal.
